While we often think of plastic surgery as an elective or unnecessary procedure, in many cases, it has the power to transform lives. No one knows this better than renowned Dallas plastic surgeon Dr. Sameer Jejurikar. From contributing to significant breakthroughs in plastic surgery safety to volunteering his time to provide essential cleft palate and lip surgeries in Bangladesh, Dr. Jejurikar has changed the lives of many people in Dallas and beyond.
A Renowned Dallas Plastic Surgeon
Dr. Jejurikar has been practicing plastic surgery for over a decade, but his current home is in Dallas, Texas, where he is honored to serve as a board-certified plastic surgeon at the Dallas Plastic Surgery Institute.
Dr. Jejurikar’s journey began at the distinguished University of Michigan Medical School, where he quickly rose to the top of his class and gained entry into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. After completing his coursework, he remained in Michigan and completed his residency in plastic surgery at the University of Michigan Medical Center.
While most plastic surgeons choose to launch their careers at this point in their training, Dr. Jejurikar wanted to continue building his knowledge and expertise so that he could help transform the lives of a wider range of patients. To reach these goals, he enrolled in the world-famous Manhattan Eye, Ear, and Throat Hospital, where he completed his post-graduate subspecialty training in aesthetic surgery.
Once he completed this training, Dr. Jejurikar was eager to begin practicing full time. Today, he works from his bustling office at the Dallas Plastic Surgery Institute, a state-of-the-art facility that is among Dallas’s top plastic surgery centers. During his time there, Dr. Jejurikar has focused his energies as a specialist in breast and body-contouring surgeries and has become an important innovator in his field. In particular, he has worked passionately to minimize the risks associated with the popular Brazilian Butt Lift procedure. As a leading member of the Multisociety Gluteal Fat Grafting Task Force, his contributions have resulted in important improvements to the surgery.
Dr. Jejurikar is widely known for his research and scholarship, including many national presentations, book chapters, and articles. He is also a member of many prestigious medical organizations, including the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), and the Dallas Society of Plastic Surgeons.
A Patient-Centered Approach
Dr. Jejurikar is respected in Dallas and beyond for his extensive training and exceptional skill. In fact, many of his patients have referred to him as “one of the best surgeons in Dallas” over the years. Beyond his excellence in performing plastic surgery procedures, what many of his patients appreciate most is his caring, sensitive, and individualized approach.
In particular, Dr. Jejurikar focuses his practice around the idea that each patient is a unique individual with specific needs. Since plastic surgery is often elective, the success of any procedure depends significantly on the patient’s satisfaction with the results. Dr. Jejurikar’s foremost goal is to gain a complete understanding of each patient’s goals and create surgical solutions to help them achieve them.
Not only has he performed many of the most in-demand plastic surgery procedures, but he has also helped new mothers regain confidence after the birth of a child by providing many successful “mommy makeovers.” He has also provided numerous Mohs reconstruction surgeries, restoring facial tissue in skin cancer patients to help them feel better about their appearances.
Traveling the World to Give Back
While his work in Dallas takes up most of Dr. Jejurikar’s time, he also finds ways to dedicate his surgical expertise to changing lives around the world. In recent years, he has become an enthusiastic volunteer for the non-profit organization Smile Bangladesh, which provides free cleft lip and cleft palate surgeries to adults and children who would not otherwise have access to these crucial procedures. With the help of committed volunteers like Dr. Jejurikar, Smile Bangladesh has been expanding its reach in Bangladesh and beyond since 2006.
Although cleft lip and palate surgeries are common in the United States, in Bangladesh, this is not the case. Over 300,000 Bangladeshi children suffer from cleft lip (an opening or split in the upper lip that occurs when facial structures do not properly form in the womb). Access to cleft lip and palate surgeries is incredibly rare in Bangladesh; only 30 doctors in the country have been trained to do the procedure. Another serious issue is that the Bangladesh health care system does not provide coverage for cleft palate and lip procedures, leaving many low-income families without the means to afford this expensive surgery.
The repercussions of cleft lip or palate can be devastating on many levels. If left untreated, they can cause delayed or impaired speech and language, difficulties eating, dental problems, and ear infections that make life incredibly difficult. In addition to the health risks, cleft lip or palate can have a harsh personal impact for people who suffer from it. Bangladeshi people with cleft lips are shunned by society, and without treatment, it is difficult for them to be accepted. Through surgery, however, cleft lip and palate can be corrected without severe scarring and prevent children from facing a lifetime of discrimination. While people living in the U.S. may take this simple surgery for granted, in Bangladesh, it is truly life changing.
By making two trips to the country per year, doctors provide as many surgeries as possible, often working 12-hour days and completing up to 16 surgeries per day. Because of volunteers like Dr. Jejurikar, Smile Bangladesh is able to fulfill its mission to restore the smiles of Bangladeshi people and help them live healthier and happier lives.
